Sun Life at 120... continuously working with Filipinos for a brighter future!

One of the first things I did after getting a job after college back in 1995 was to get a Sun Life endowment insurance plan. I don't remember what exactly it was called back then but I remember remitting a small amount every month from my salary. It meant I was insured. Aside from insurance, the plan also offered maturity benefits. Since I was still single and it was pretty much just my sister and I, I named her as the beneficiary.

It's now 2015, exactly 20 years after I first signed up for a Sun Life plan. I was surprised when I received an invitation to Sun Life's 120th Anniversary Thanksgiving Dinner. Wow, have they really been in the country that long?

The celebration was held at Palacio De Maynila in Malate. I was surprised by the lavish set-up. Guests were going to be treated to a dinner and a musical entitled Legacy, The Sun Life Story which chronicles Sun Life's history in the Philippines. It was to be headlined by veteran theater performers Robert Seña and Isay Alvarez.

Prior to the evening's programs, former President Fidel V. Ramos was called onto the stage and awarded with a special token from Sun Life. During the chaotic days leading up to the EDSA Revolution and the turbulent times which followed after, he was the one who helped Sun Life reach a decision to stay in the Philippines. Former President Ramos was wearing a Tagapagligtas beret, the very same one worn by the 44 SAF members who were killed in the recent Mamasapano clash plus a black shirt which said "Salute To The Fallen". President Ramos relayed that the SAF was founded during his time and that he considers the SAF members his grandchildren.

I knew my hubby and I were in for a real treat where dinner was concerned after perusing the menu. Everything sounded delicious! Read more »
